auto theft Auto Theft Prevention

Every 20 seconds, someone steals a vehicle in the United States. Don't let one of them be yours. Here's how you can cut the chances of being a victim of auto theft:

  • Use a steering wheel lock.
  • Install a car alarm - preferably one with a kill switch.
  • If you are buying a new vehicle, look for one with an electric key system, which also has a built-in car alarm and automatic anti-theft system.
  • Never leave your wallet or anything else in your car that might entice a thief.
  • When using a valet service, give them only the ignition key. Most vehicles now come with a valet key for that purpose.
  • Never place your vehicle keys on the same ring as the keys to your residence.
  • Never use a "hide-a-key."
  • Whenever possible, park in well-lighted areas.
